Eagle-eyed blog reader Michael Stasica sent me this shot of a Smarties box where sure enough there's a symbol that looks suspiciously like a Heart and Stroke Health Check symbol.
Apparently the symbol means that there are no artificial colours in Smarties.
Huzzah?
As mentioned in yesterday's post - the semblance of health sells and clearly Smarties are no dummies.
I'd tell Health Check to get lawyers on this right away but of course it'd be a tough case to suggest Smarties' check was hurting Health Check's credibility - they do that all by themselves (remember there are already Health Checks on Slush Puppies and frozen yogurt with more calories and sugar than ice cream).

Are Smarties (Canadian M&Ms) trying to pass themselves off as healthy?

i know its not related but i just read the "eat stop eat" plan. do you think eating whatever and fasting 2 days a week is good to lose weight?
ReplyDeleteHi Joan,
ReplyDeleteFasting is a horrible plan for weight management and certainly a diet and not a lifestyle.
We have M&Ms in Canada. Smarties are gross candy covered cheap ass chocolate that little kids like.
ReplyDeleteI think that if we all eat stuff that has a "health check" on them we'd all probably suffer from malnutrition. Honestly, putting checks on food don't make them any healthier. I think people should be more concious of what they're eating in general, instead of just throwing stuff without a "health check" on them into their grocery cart.
ReplyDeleteSorry, I meant "with" a health check on them into their grocery cart.
ReplyDeleteThe new no artificial colour smarties taste like poison. Has anyone not made a comparison between the old and new?
ReplyDeleteThe new ones have a very strong chemical taste - maybe they are poisonous now - cannot trust these corporations anymore!
Switching to m&m's, I suppose. Is there a product out there similar to old smarties?
Anon...dark chocolate M&Ms are good. I agree-just got a pack of the new smarties and they are disgusting. I won't be getting them again. :(
ReplyDeleteI have a very big hate on for the "Health Check" program after watching an episode of Marketplace about it.

I don't trust any logo anymore because most companies make up their own.
