The Vegan RD resigns from the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine for their incredibly irresponsible ads that vilify those with obesity. Special bonus feature to her post - the response from PCRM President Dr. Neil Barnard where he explains why "making light" of those who suffer with obesity is a-ok by him.
Reuter's Ivan Oransky calls pre-diseases pre-posterous (via the Atlantic's Brian Fung).
Lindy West skewers weight loss guru-ism and nutritional zealotry.

While I'm a fan of Dr. Barnard, his ads work against him because they are 1. not funny 2. boring 3. not believable 4. unconvincing
ReplyDeleteIf you want to see what a great ad looks like, take moment to view this one from "down under" ... http://bit.ly/A3HDe8
It's the only ad that I've seen that is creative, has shock value, and gets the message across.
While I agree with the health claims of veganism and I'm trying very hard myself to eat a vegetarian diet, this is precisely the reason why I don't support either PETA or PCRM--they're self-righteous ideologues. They're fanaticism scares off more people than it recruits.
ReplyDeleteThe fact that Jezebel's weight/diet/health section is also called Weighty Matters totally throws me off.
ReplyDeleteI've been monitoring this site for just over a week. It's terrible what's going on there. The forum participants are overwhelmingly women. While so far I haven't read anyone saying directly "Shame on you" the tone is shaming, blaming, and in my opinion (a journalist resear4ching diets) dangerous. It is ridiculous dietary advice. *You didn't lose weight this week? You may have eaten some nuts, or used a salad dressing with fat*. The sample diet is around 1000 calories a day. That's not safe nutrition. It's also pushing grain (carbs) when it is scientifically proven that overweight people (perhaps diagnosed with D2) do best on a low carb diet over other diets. And are sated and properly nourished.
