The Chocolate Olympics Have Arrived!

In case you weren't aware, Cadbury is one of the London 2012 Summer Olympic Games' chief sponsors.

About a month ago I was in Heathrow Airport and I came upon these chocolate medals and this vending machine.

McDonald's of course is in on the action too as a main sponsor and they've apparently built the largest McDonald's Restaurant in the world to mark the occasion. It'll seat 1,500 people and over the course of the Olympics it's expected to sell 50,000 Big Macs and 180,000 portions of fries.

Anyone else out there think it's a shame that what was once a celebration of sport is now in large part a celebration of consumerism and junk food?

hear you loud and clear and couldn't agree more! Unfortunately the f&v sector has no margins to invest in this type of thing... SAD!

  2. It's commerce; corporations taking advantage of a marketing opportunity. It's still a celebration of sport. Advertising simply expands the scope of the celebration allowing Olympic level athletic performance to be viewed by a global audience.

    1. The food corps are trying to foster an association between olympic sport and their own 'move more' campaigns. Trying to make people feel that its OK to consume their products as long as they expend a bit more energy is false and misleading.

It irks me more to see athletes shilling junk food in TV commercials. I understand everyone needs to get paid but I doubt any athlete trains and then refuels on junk. And that's the message that kids pick up - junk food is healthy & helps athletic performance.

  4. This reminds me of a clip from "This Hour Has 22 Minutes," so I had to share: http://www.cbc.ca/player/Shows/22+Minutes/Clips/ID/1409314276/?page=28

Sport and junk food have gone hand-in-hand ever since people first sang "Buy me some peanuts and Cracker Jack..."

  6. What shames me more is that my first thought was actually cool where could I get one of the chocolate medals!

  7. Have just been to watch the olympic torch relay pass through our town. As I predicted to my wife, Coca Cola were there with an open topped bus and cheerleaders. Other corporations also had their presence, including Samsung and our now nationalised debtpeddlars Lloyds/TSB. There's a commentary on our times...
