NYC's Starbuck's Calorie-Inclusive Menu Boards in the Wild

Thanks to Flickr users pnoeric and scalleja who kindly shared their photos with the world, below are some shots of New York City Starbucks' menu boards.

Click them to see the more than a Big-Mac calories Venti White Chocolate Mocha, and then the more than a Quarterpounder calories everything baked.

Ya think that might affect orders?

Love them, hate them but McDonalds has a descent iced coffee made with sugar free vanilla. I was led in that direction by a fellow who works for Star Bucks.

How many people even have a vague idea about how many calories they should be eating in a day? I bet not too many.

People are going to ignore information that is not meaningful to them, unless they are first educated on how to use it. They need to be tought how to monitor their eating habits: for many people, it may barely enter their consciousness when they snack or eat. They need to know information, such as many calories they are consuming now, in every meal and snack, and how many they should be consuming.

  3. In California, the government is attempting to make restaurant chains add nutritional information to their menus. I recently had dinner at The Cheesecake Factory and asked the waiter if he knew the calorie count for a dish I was thinking about ordering. He told me in confidence that he had no idea, that his company would be very upset if he knew and shared the information, and that they are taking legal action to try to prevent the state from imposing this rule.

When I asked why, he smugly stated that if we knew how may calories were in the food there, they were afraid that we would choose someplace else to eat. (He did confide that each piece of cheesecake served contained about 2000 calories. Oy!)

I retorted that if all things were equal and that if The Cheesecake Factory had calorie information on it and another restaurant roughly equavelent did not, I'd go to TCF in a heartbeat and order whatever the heck I wanted!

Of course, what I would want is something on the lower end of the calorie scale, but I would still eat at that restaurant and gratefully would remember that they helped me manage my nutritional intake.

    Knowledge is power.

  4. That's insane. My drink of choice is the skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte, glad to see it's only 160 calories

  5. hey, very cool to see my photos up here :-) sorry they aren't of better quality. personally I find the calories at the starbucks menus REALLY stop me from ordering crap from their pastry case, so I guess it's good. I'm sure it's killing their sales, though. best, Eric (pnoeric)

Wow. I am always on the lookout for the equivalent to our café espresso allongé double. At Starbucks that equivalent seems to be the Caffe Americano, no milk, at 25 x 2 = 50 cal. Had one the other day at JFK but hey - they didn't have any menu board. Good coffee; glad to see from the pic that it was a good choice. Just by instinct, I always give their pastry selection a very wide miss. If I ever expect to want a pastry, I make and bring my own. For instance, 1 slice banana bread using Mark Bittman's recipe slightly modified, 192 cal.
