I want to welcome the folks arriving from the article in the Ottawa Citizen, the one in the National Post and from the online Chicago Tribune feature and the brief feature on the A Channel (viewable below).
I'm a Canadian family doctor with a focus in obesity medicine and my blog Weighty Matters tries to look at obesity, the media and nutrition from what I feel to be a common sense, realistic and hopefully at least sometimes, a humourous manner.
The commotion today has to do with my series on Ottawa's Hospital Food and how woefully unhealthy many of the choices sold by our hospitals to captive patients and staff are.
Enjoy yourselves, poke around and hope to see you again soon.
Best regards,
Yoni

I read the article in the Citizen this morning and I couldn't agree more. When I heard that Tim Horton's was opening in the HI lobby I was disgusted. I have never eaten anything at any Tim Horton's outlets including their coffee. And, unfortunately, Tickers has changed caterers several times with less and less good food offered. I am a research scientist and have been at the HI for almost 20 years. I always bring my own lunch!!!
ReplyDeleteI am sorry, but this comment from the article disturbed me greatly,
ReplyDelete"If you have the right genes, Dr. Dent said, "it doesn't matter what you eat. Why should people with genes that protect them from those various things have to put up with these diets that don't taste so good?""
So, if you aren't currently at risk for heart disease you should feel free to eat crap that supposedly tastes better than what I assume is vile healthy food in the eyes of Mr. Dent? Since when does healthy have to taste bad? That's a very sad statement. As if the heart is the only thing to protect with a healthy diet? What about cancer? Diabetes? Metabolic issues? Heck, how about eating well just to feel good about getting out of bed in the morning.
I will get off my soapbox now. That statement made me see red.
I too read the article in the Citizen. I appreciate your work in this field. My only comment is that I would equate serving very unhealthy food in a hospital to selling cigarettes in a pharmacy (a practice that was banned some time ago).
ReplyDeleteKeep up the great work!
